Knitters Wanted

March meeting - Canvaswork and Tactile Books

We had a very busy time in March with Canvas work, Tactile books and we were all excited to see the completed  Tolkein project. There was also talk about Westhope and contributions for the exhibition at the AGM arrived to be sent off for display.



Canvass work was a hands on session led by Anne Haigh and Lorna Howell













A group of us also gathered with Elizabeth to talk about Tactile books, Inspired by Elizabeth we quickly sorted ourselves into 3 groups to make joint books and a couple of people are inspired to start their own!

This months raffle prize bags  were yellow and were won by Anne Watts and a visitor Jane Fox.

Art Van Go - Van in Northfield on Saturday

This Saturday, several branch members will be enjoying a wonderful dayschool with Art Van Go at Northfield Friends Meeting House*.

As part of this day, there is the opportunity for anyone interested in purchasing supplies to come along in the afternoon and do a bit of shopping, as Viv and Kev from Art Van Go will have the van with them. If you've never been to their shop or seen them at a show, you'll know that they sell all manner of wonderful things for textiles and other related art forms.

If there are things you'd like to buy, or you just fancy a browse, please come along to Northfield Friends Meeting House, Meeting House Lane, Off Church Road, Northfield, Birmingham, B31 2LD.

The van will be open for business from 3pm till just after 4pm.

March Library Meeting

While it seems like a couple of weeks ago now, we had a great time at the Library of Birmingham for our 'Come Stitch With Us' meeting.

We are looking forward to the next session, which is on Saturday 4th of April from 11 am - 2pm. This is the Saturday of the Easter weekend, however we will be meeting as usual, so if you are free we would love to see you.

Requirements List - Tantalising Textile Tag Books with Angie Hughes

We are looking forward to Angie Hughes's workshop on the 27th of June. The requirements list for the session is below:

  • Something to make the base out of, pelmet Vilene, about ½ metre (Angie will have some for sale)
  • A few scraps of colourful fabric for the base and decoration, Angie's are hand dyed and printed
  • A nice central image, Angie's was an elephant from an Indian miniature painting Angie found on the net; she will have some to choose from
  • A price labels and brads
  • Some letter blocks and stamping pad
  • Starry Sequins, beads things to decorate
  • Bondaweb and baking parchment
  • Iron and board
  • Hand sewing threads and twinkly cords (there’s a little bit of machining but you can use Angie's machine for this)
  • Sewing kit, scissors etc.
Angie will bring everything else we need.

Solihull Branch Events

The Solihull branch have a couple of events coming up that may be of interest to our members:

March 14th - Workshop with Lynda Monk,  ' Creative Surfaces 1'
'Explore the different effects that can be achieved using Kunin felt combined with acrylic mediums
to create textured pieces of work.  Each student will create a vessel which will be ready to take home
and add colour to the surface. '

Quilt and Embroidery Show in Uttoxeter on Friday 24th April 2015
A coach will leave Solihull Methodist church car park at 8.45am (sorry, no parking for us there) and
 9.00am at the long stay car park in Monkspath Hall Rd at far end, furthest from town.
 
 We should arrive back at Solihull around 5.30pm depending on traffic.
 
 If we fill the coach, the total cost will be £16 for seniors and £17 for adults. 
 Please be aware that we may need to charge another pound or two if we can't fill the coach.

Westhope 2015

We are now making plans for our autumn trip to Westhope Craft College this autumn, on the 18th to 20th September, with Stevie Walker as our tutor.

Stevie is propsing a range of hand embroidery topics, with possible themes being Saxon Samplers, Folksy Hand Embroidery on Felt and Hand Stitch Mark making, details of which will be available from Anne in the near future.

Westhope is a wonderful old house, absolutely choc full of fascinating art, including lovely textiles in every room, and a beautiful garden. Dinner is marvellous, with lots of fresh local produce on offer, and the opportunity to learn new skills with friends in a relaxed atmosphere.

We can accommodate up to 16 people in a combination of 5 single rooms, 4 twin rooms and 1 sleeping 3 people. There are two double bed rooms if someone wanted to bring a partner/spouse.
Prices for the weekend will range between £193-£290, with the cheaper prices being available if people are willing to share rooms.

Library Saturday 7 March


It's library time again and we  are in our normal spot  on the Mezzanine floor above the library cafe from 11am until about 2pm,  Everyone is welcome to join us to  bring any stitching projects you are working on whether you need a bit of help or encouragement or just want to join in the social event and carry on with your project.  We will have felt, binca and other activities for both adults and children.

Even if you can only make it for an hours or so do come along to catch up, have a chat and a stitch

March Branch Meeting - Hands on Canvaswork Session

This Monday (March 9th) at our branch meeting, we will be enjoying a practical stitching session, led by Anne and Lorna, both of whom have a love for beautiful and interesting canvaswork. We know that many of you enjoyed making brooches with Tina Francis at our November session, and this meeting is designed to build on those skills.

Don't worry if you missed the November session, or have never done any canvaswork before, it will be suitable for all levels of stitchers.

Please bring with you:

Basic sewing kit, scissors and tapestry needles with large eyes.
Any threads you have that you don't know what to do with 
they can be glittery, perle, soft cotton, stranded cottons as well as wools not too fine though.
Colours are up to the individual and we will provide canvas to work on.
