National Stitch Day at the Library of Birmingham

Join us for a Celebration of Stitch at Library of Birmingham on National Stitch Day.

Don't forget to join us in the library on Saturday for our usual mix of stitching and chat.

For this special occasion we will be on the 3rd floor.  The area is outside the Gallery – so come up the escalators and then turn left  towards the back of the building, away from Broad Street. We will be in the space on the right hand side, overlooking the side terrace.

We will be there from 10.30 until 4 pm;  everyone is welcome to pop along for an hour or so or to stay for longer if you can.

We are on the library website so have a look.

We will be giving people the opportunity to create a leaf doodle with members around to help those who need it.

We will also have binca for children to have a go for the very young we have pasta shapes for them to thread onto wool.

July Notes

Branch Notices July 2014

Good evening everyone and we hope you enjoy the summer party. The following notices update you on a number of issues. Please contact any committee member tonight, or at any time if you want to discuss anything further.

Twenty Five Years. We are proud to say that Mary Smith has been a member (and a previous chair) of this branch for 25 years. Congratulations and thank you for all the work you have done and the help and advice you continue to provide.

Septembers meeting Heather will Chair as Bernadette is in Africa (and very excited about it). I am sad however to be missing the guild folios which should be a fantastic meeting. Come along to see beautiful work and be inspired and bring cameras and sketch books if you want to record inspirations. Next summer’s competition is inspired by the folios.

Membership renewal is happening in September and October. Forms will be available at those meetings. The national guild is raising the fee by £3. A document, explaining the challenges they face and their rationale for the future has been circulated to all members so that you can be fully informed. Those of us who went to the Regional Day heard the chief executive speak and were impressed by what he had to say. The guild does face real challenges nationally. For example sales of Stitch have dropped considerably (along with magazines generally) and this is a major part of their income. In order to slightly reduce the burden on local members the branch has decided that we will reduce our local fee by £1 this year, thus limiting the increase to members, so that the new rate will be £43

Cocomad: many thanks to all those who helped with making items and helping on the day. We had a lovely day and further publicised our meetings. Several children and adults stayed to stitch. Your work is now being enjoyed by lots of people who bought things, or who bought raffle tickets. We are able to make the reduction in local fees because we have been doing well raising money, via things like the Cocomad festival and through the raffle, We really need as much support as possible with branch activities, so please when volunteers are asked for or if you are asked to stich something think about whether you can help. Just a small contribution from lots of people makes all the difference.
Cocomad pictures are on the blog  Please use the blog to keep in touch over the summer A guide to accessing it has been produced a few copies of which are available at this meeting, but the document will also be emailed out to everyone.

If at any time you come across a possible speaker for a branch meeting please let one of the committee know, with full contact details especially email if possible.
If you can please work on your Tolkien pieces over the summer. We have had several lovely pieces of work already but lots of us haven’t got around to it yet (me included)

The DVD library is up and running. They will be £1 to borrow for a month, or this summer for 2 months so a bargain this time around. They are now available at the side of the meeting on a first come first served basis.

We would like to have an additional Committee member so please if you are interested speak to an existing member. Existing members will be standing again, but may revise some roles.
Sadly as many of you know Clare Wilkins husband Tom died recently. Clare was with him and able to share precious time during his illness. For those of you who never met Tom he was a lovely man, who made up funny poems and always had a friendly word for others. We are holding a collection in his memory at the end of the meeting. Proceeds will go to the British Heart Foundation and Action on Hearing Loss. I know Clare will be grateful for any donation you are able to make.

The Embroiderers’ Guild has been invited to become a lead contributor along with Fine Cell and the RSN in the creation of an embroidered version of the entire MAGNA CARTA Wikipedia page on the web. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magna_Carta
  1. ‘Expressions of Interest’ should be sent to Annie Franz by email only… afranz@embroiderersguild.com by 22nd August 2014 latest. We appreciate completely that many branches will have ceased meeting for the summer break so we can only ask that you do your best to pass on this email to those who may be interested.

  1. ‘Expressions of Interest’ need only be brief… Name, Membership Number, Region, credentials and an image of a recent piece of work. Type - Magna Carta – Your Name – Membership Number - Your Region in the subject line of your email to Annie Franz.

  1. The names of members who express an interest will go into a draw to be conducted wc 25th August 2014.
Copies of the email are on the side for more details.

Workshops Please see Margaret Richards tonight and sign up for an interest in the September mini workshops. She will email you with details once they are firmed up. Places also available for Greta Fitchett in November please sign up.

Finally we hope you all have a wonderful summer and please, if you can, come to the celebration of stitch at Birmingham Library on August 2nd. Please if you can sign up with Anne Haigh today to come for some of the time. She will email you ( or call if no email) as soon as we know what Library have agreed to in more detail.

Summer party and cakes galore

It was our summer party and we celebrated with gorgeous cakes from our Angela Rowles.

We had the calorie free variety from Greta Fitchett (more from Greta later in this blog)

We enjoyed a visit from Avoncroft Young Embroiderer's with a display of their excellent work.

The raffle proved to be extremely popular with a second special summer prize this month.
A violet bag and a special Summer Hamper

The special summer hamper prize was  won by Pam Henson

With Heather's purple wedding theme it was serendipitous that she should win the beautiful  violet bag and it's contents

We had a sneak preview of Heather's wedding flowers that many members have helped to create

The summer competition was 'Happy Days'. Margaret kindly lent us the cup for a few hours so that she could win it back again with this delightful entry:

More competition enteries

A young embroiderer pointing out the finer detail.

We will let you know about more upcoming competitions over the summer so keep watching the blog.

Greta Fitchett
Greta talked to us about her cake and chocolate creation creations.  She explained her research which we all wanted to join in with. Greta impressed the importance of sketch books for recording ideas.

We were lucky enough to see examples that have featured in Stitch and those entered in 3D categories at quilting shows.
Members enjoyed a close up look at Greta's work

Examples of small quilts using small interesting  items like the tea spoon.

Tea with the Queen

Strawberries for tea.

cup cake anyone?
Chocy taster?
We are now looking forward to Greta's workshop 'Box of Chocs' coming on November 29th. Contact Margaret Richards or email birminghamembroiderersguild@gmail.com to sign up, places are limited and it's bound to be popular after our  taster session.

CoCoMad

We had a great day at Cotteridge Park for the annual CoCoMad event.

A huge thanks to everyone who contributed whether it was donating items for sale or the raffle, time on the stall or just popping by to say hello and make a purchase or two.
Setting up the stall - and a chance to display our bunting in full

We sold many items stitched by members and most importantly chatted to sewers young and old, rekindled flames in those who haven't had their needle out for a while and generally promoted the guild and the art of embroidery.

The Christmas section

There were free activities for children and adults; Janet Bev and Elizabeth were especially busy giving a guiding hand.

We had 3 raffle prizes all all of the winners were delighted, and one particular 'chair' has a special new (much admired) cushion.

Some special help drawing the raffle

Members Competition Time 'Happy days'

July 14th is our Summer Party and we will hold our annual members Summer competition.

If you haven't entered before or for a long time it is a great chance to show your work to fellow members. The theme of 'Happy Days' can be interrupted as widely as you like and  knowing our members this will bring in a very wide range of work.

It might be a piece you have had tucked away for years or an item you have created especially for this competition.  Any work is accepted, a long as it has some stitching - hand or machine; it can be a framed picture or a 3D extravaganza, a cushion or a bag.   Anything at all will be a welcome entry. So please bring your piece along and lets go for a record number of entries this year.

There will be a competition table in the entry hall. So don't forget to enter your piece, admire the others and remember to vote.

Voting is simple - dishes will be provided and a coin of any value counts as one vote (and swells our funds). Members can vote as many times as they wish and the entry with the most coins is announced during the meeting and the cup is handed over.

Cocomad 2013

CoCoMAD 2014 – 5th July

"The small but perfectly formed festival in Cotteridge Park"

Lets have fun in the park:

At CocoMad we will be encouraging people of all ages both new or back to stitch so on the day we will have activities including Binca,  felt flower and cross stitch.

Some members have put their name on a rota and we are hoping that many more members, old and new, will come along on the day to help with the stall and with stitching with visitors. We will all be joining in the fun and have chance to look around so please pop along at anytime if you are not on the rota.

There is lots more to see follow the link to see more details of CocoMad . It is also Library day but there will be plenty of time to come along afterwards.

We have lots of lovely items donated by members for sale and for raffle prizes but will be happy to have many more to make a great display and to showcase members work whilst raising money for out branch.

If you have items to donate for sale please bring them along on the day.

A quick reminder of what we would like from you:
  • We are going to have a bit of a Christmas element to some of the things we are selling so we are asking members to make a Christmas card or Christmas Coasters/decorations.   We are not asking for non Christmas cards  as we have quite a few left from last time.
  • We also welcome individual small items to sell, perhaps a framed picture, even better if it on the event theme  Festival of the Forest but not essential. You can donate the leaf from May's meeting which fits in nicely with the  theme.
