Summer Fun: Interweave Press

Continuing our Summer Fun series, we are featuring Interweave Press, the company behind Cloth Paper Scissors and Quilting Arts magazines. They have a lot of free project and technique guides on their website. All you need to do to access these is to sign up to their site, and then you can browse through all the topics which interest you.

Summer Fun: Bonnie McCaffery VidCasts

Bonnie McCaffery is a talented American Quilt artist. She publishes monthly VidCasts on a wide range of topics. While these videos often feature quilts and quilting, the textile arts featured are very inspirational, and provide many hours of watching!

Summer Fun: Joggles Classes

This week in our Summer Fun series we are featuring embroidery classes from Joggles.
 
Joggles do classes in a wide range of subjects, several of which may be of interest to embroiderers, including:
 

  • Tandleton Rose Bracelet - starting on August 13th, stitch a bracelet with ribbon and embroidery thread roses and leaves.
  • Scarves to Dye For - starting on August 23rd, learn dye techniques to make simple and beautiful lace, silk and ribbon scarves.
These classes have already started, but are still open for registration:
 
  • Beadoodlery - freeform stitched design for creative beading
  • Beetles in Stumpwork - suitable for beginner to intermediate embroiderers
  • Sketchn' Contour Embroidery - Using the technique of Contour Line drawing to develop these drawings into embroideries
  • One Stitch - Learn to use traditional embroidery stitches in an abstract and creative way; hand sewing only
Classes range in price from about $24 - $35, which is about £15.50 to £22. For that you get several weeks of teaching, with detailed PDFs to guide you through the course, as well as access to a discussion board to share your work with the tutor and other students, as well as getting advice on how to progress. You do need to provide the materials used, as the classes are all online, however a materials list is provided, and the staff at Joggles are very helpful too.

Summer Fun: Workshop On The Web

This week in our Summer Fun series we are featuring Workshop On The Web. This online magazine publishes four editions a year, and is curated by Maggie Grey.

As well as new product and book reviews, the magazine features about 8-10 PDF articles on a number of topics. The current edition includes articles about Bokhara couching, screenprinting, using flowers as a design source, and 3D forms. Each article is very detailed, with full colour pictures. It can be downloaded and read on your computer, and is also compatible with a tablet (such as an iPad) or Kindle/e-book reader if you have one.

A 1 year subscription for Workshop On The Web, covering 4 issues, costs £20. To find out more, see their subscription page. You can either subscribe by post, or online, and subscribing online will get you access very quickly, so you can dive right in and start being inspired!
